Trained as a chemist, Lu Liu, Ph.D., prepares and prosecutes patent applications related to chemical, pharmaceutical, and material science technologies. She works with clients developing innovations related to new chemical entities, small-molecule and protein therapeutics, catalysts, therapeutic compositions, bioactive materials, polymers, adhesives, wire and cable coating materials, petroleum refining products, bio-based fuels, low carbon renewable fuels as well as insecticides and herbicides formulations.
Prior to her legal career, Lu conducted doctoral research in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. She has vast experience in small molecule synthesis and methodology development. Lu has coauthored research papers, review articles, and book chapters in the areas of transition-metal mediated heterocyclic synthesis, photo-assisted nitrogen-centered radical reactions, and diastereo- and regio-selective fluorination of ene-sulfamates to achieve non-natural fluorinated amino acids.
