Associate
Lin Ao, Ph.D., focuses on patent prosecution, portfolio management, and client counseling in the fields of biotechnology and life sciences. With a doctoral degree in pharmaceutical sciences, her technical expertise includes gene therapy, immunology, and cancer biology.
Lin has experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications, managing and counseling clients on large global portfolios, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, performing competitive landscape evaluations, and providing patentability, validity, and infringement opinions. Her practice further extends to assisting with post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews (IPRs), before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Lin has a wide range of scientific research expertise, most notably in the areas of cancer biology, immuno-oncology, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical sciences. Prior to joining Finnegan, Lin completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, where she investigated epigenetic factors important for establishing the tumor immune microenvironment in melanoma using CRISPR screening. Following her postdoctoral training, Lin held a business development and licensing associated position in the Dana-Farber Innovation Office, where she performed due diligence on the commercialization potential of technologies and led internal and external marketing efforts to promote research discoveries.
Finnegan is lead and preferred IP transactions counsel for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, handling more than 50 diligence projects each year, including all IP and related transactional aspects of the matters. The transactions span the full gamut of technologies from small molecule through biologics such as antibodies, oligonucleotides, and gene therapies. Finnegan also provides extensive assistance with post-deal integration procedures and subsequent global prosecution and portfolio strategy, ensuring a seamless transition of IP assets to the company and maximum value from acquired IP.

Finnegan is lead and preferred IP strategy counsel for one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, handling all aspects of prosecution and portfolio management for multiple top-tier products for the client. The work spans the gamut from drafting and prosecution through larger strategic planning, patent term extension, and pre-litigation preparation on blockbuster small molecule and biologic products in the oncology, rheumatology, immunology, neuromuscular, and cell and gene therapy spaces.
