Karlie Hinton combines business acumen, pharmaceutical industry experience, and regulatory background to support clients in complex patent matters within the life sciences and chemical industries. Her multidisciplinary training in medical biology, chemistry, and graduate-level business, coupled with international legal experience, positions her at the intersection of intellectual property (IP) strategy, regulatory compliance, and transactional counseling.
Karlie's practice focuses on Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) and Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA) litigation, patent prosecution, and strategic client counseling. Drawing on her experience in the pharmaceutical and health services industries, she advises clients on IP strategies that align with regulatory requirements and business objectives. Karlie leverages her graduate business studies with a specialization in health services administration to guide pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients through complex commercialization decisions.
Prior to joining Finnegan, Karlie gained valuable international perspective as a summer associate at the largest law firm in Southeast Asia, where she counseled international clients on IP enforcement strategies and conducted due diligence for cross-border transactions. Her healthcare industry experience includes ensuring Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) compliance and managing quality indicators, providing insight into how the health system and regulatory landscape shapes pharmaceutical innovation. Further, Karlie’s experience with international population health research as well as designing and conducting Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved studies strengthens her ability to evaluate scientific evidence in patent disputes involving clinical data and methods of treatment.
During law school, Karlie participated in a moot court competition through the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). She served as president of the university’s Intellectual Property Association, and she was nominated to the S. Jay Plager Indianapolis Intellectual Property American Inn of Court.
Karlie's writing excellence has earned recognition through multiple publications. Her undergraduate honors thesis, an international cross-sectional study on preventive care, was published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, while her law school seminar paper on patent valuation challenges was presumed for publication by Indiana University’s intellectual property law journal.
