Technical Specialist
Ching-Ya (Gyan) Hsu focuses on patent preparation and prosecution in the electrical and computer technology areas, with extensive experience in international prosecution, particularly in Taiwan and China. His practice also involves legal opinions, including patentability, freedom-to-operate (FTO), and invalidity and infringement analysis.
Gyan has extensive experience with drafting and prosecuting patent applications across a wide range of technologies, including power electronics, wireless communications, computer hardware and software, video standards and codecs, memory controllers, processors, semiconductor devices, light-emitting diode (LED) displays, integrated circuit (IC) design, consumer electronics, unmanned aerial vehicles, and bicycle components.
Gyan assists attorneys in reexaminations, inter partes review (IPR), and patent litigation as well as preparing opinions of counsel. He also performs FTO, invalidity, and infringement analyses for a diverse range of products, from plumbing components, bicycle parts, and computer peripherals to power connectors, LED packages and chips, touch screen controllers, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
Gyan is a registered Taiwan patent attorney and holds a Chinese patent attorney qualification certificate. Prior to joining Finnegan, he worked at a top-tier intellectual property law firm in Taiwan as a patent engineer, gaining experience in the practice of patent prosecution in the United States, China, and Taiwan.
During his graduate studies, Gyan’s research focused on applications of power electronics in power systems and maximum power point tracking control strategies for wind energy conversion.
