Technical Specialist
Felicity (Sung Yeon) Kim applies a broad, cross-disciplinary engineering background to intellectual property (IP) matters at the intersection of life sciences, medical devices, and mechanical technologies. With doctoral-level training in bioengineering and a foundation in both mechanical and biomedical engineering, Felicity brings profound methodological insight to patent preparation, prosecution, and due diligence for clients working at the frontier of biotechnology and emerging deep tech.
Felicity's technical fluency spans mechanical design and simulation, microfabrication, and multi-omic biological analysis. She is experienced in finite element analysis (FEA/ABAQUS), computer-aided design (SolidWorks, PTC Creo), and manual lathe machining, soft lithography, and cleanroom fabrication. Felicity complements this hardware expertise with computational skills in Python, MATLAB, and R, and hands-on laboratory command of spatial transcriptomics, next-generation sequencing, confocal microscopy, and in vivo animal models. This combination allows her to engage substantively with inventors across a wide range of technologies and to translate complex innovations into clear, defensible patent claims.
Before joining the firm, Felicity built a strong record connecting technology and IP strategy. As a PCI Fellow at the Penn Center for Innovation, she led dozens of full diligence reports assessing the technical, commercial, and IP posture of university-developed robotics and biotechnology/medical technology as well as conducted comprehensive prior-art and sequence analyses. During her PhD, Felicity served as a Venture Fellow at SOSV, a global deep-tech venture capital firm, where she evaluated emerging technologies and gained hands-on experience in technology translation and commercialization.
