Patent Agent
Abby Burrus, Ph.D., focuses on intellectual property (IP) matters within the life sciences and biotechnology fields, specifically, antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates; gene editing; ribonucleic acid (RNA) interference; plant and fungal inventions; microbial food science; and cancer therapies.
Abby prepares and prosecutes domestic and international patent applications while also conducting freedom to operate (FTO) analyses, patent landscape analyses, and competitor watches. She has experience supporting transactional matters, including assisting with the exchange of rights in IP acquisition deals. Abby has also assisted in evaluating requests for admission for litigation. She applies her knowledge of plant and fungal varieties, including plant patents, Plant Variety Protection certificates, and Plant Breeders’ Rights, to build creative and comprehensive IP portfolios.
Abby obtained her doctorate through the Organismic and Evolutionary Biology program at Harvard University, where her diverse experiences included an interdisciplinary dissertation as well as teaching courses across all kingdoms of biology. Before entering private practice, Abby served as a fellow in Harvard’s Office of Technology Development, where she consulted with university clients on potential life science market applications and conducted prior art searches to support commercialization efforts.
