This module will provide students with an overview of the US legal system in general, as well as the types and rights conveyed by various forms of intellectual property. Students will also learn the “anatomy” of a patent and the process to obtain a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The Finnegan IP University is a four-week (one-hour per week) educational program providing an overview of careers in intellectual property (IP) and covering the nuts and bolts of the U.S. patent system. The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students with a focus on attracting a strong pool of diverse candidates. Through this program, students will learn about the various types of IP rights, the basics of drafting patent applications, and how to prosecute those applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Students will have an opportunity to meet and network with IP professionals at Finnegan to gain an understanding of what it means to be an IP and patent attorney, and the endless possibilities that a career in IP offers.
