Finnegan Partner Patrick Coyne Appointed AIPLA President

Finnegan is pleased to announce that Patrick Coyne is the new president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). AIPLA is a national organization that supports intellectual property professionals and advances an effective and balanced intellectual property system through advocacy, education, training, and community outreach.​

Patrick has been recognized as a leading patent litigator in Washington, DC by Intellectual Asset Management. His litigation experience includes patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret claims; related antitrust and unfair competition issues; general commercial litigation; products liability; and domestic and international arbitration. He also helps clients develop effective IP strategies to secure and maintain the gains they make for their businesses and to plan their moves ahead.

Patrick has argued more than 100 cases in state and federal trial and appellate courts, including at the U.S. Supreme Court. He has represented clients before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC); the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO); and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). He served as a law clerk and technical advisor to Circuit Judge Edward S. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Prior to stepping into his role as president, Patrick held various positions in AIPLA, including first vice-president and second vice-president, and served on the Board of Directors. He also served as chair and vice-chair of various committees, including the IP Practice in China Committee, Special Committee on Legislation, Amicus Committee, and the Antitrust Law Committee. Additionally, Patrick is actively involved in the Federal Circuit Bar Association, where he previously served as president; the Giles S. Rich American Inn of Court; and the American Bar Association: Section of Intellectual Property Law.
