Richard Smith practices patent prosecution, litigation, and licensing relating to computers and electronics. His practice also includes a full range of opinion work in this technical area.
Mr. Smith has extensive litigation experience defending corporations against patent infringement charges, particularly computer-related litigation involving video game and telecommunication patents.
With more than 15 years of corporate patent practice, Mr. Smith has gained invaluable experience and understanding of patent issues from an in-house perspective. He has lectured on issues concerning the patentability of computer software and related inventions, and authored numerous papers and articles relating to the subject.
Highlights
- Worked at IBM as an engineer and as a patent lawyer in the development laboratory, where his work ranged from patent application preparation and prosecution to opinion work on infringement for small computer systems within the laboratory’s sphere of R&D.
- Worked in a technical law capacity as the patent counsel for Mohawk Data Sciences Corporation, where he gained experience in patent interference and litigation practice.
- Joined the General Electric Company, where he specialized in patent work relating to defense technologies, particularly aerospace and computer electronics, and was involved in a large litigation against the U.S. government.
