Andrew Chanho Sonu
Andrew Sonu represents Asia-based multinational companies in patent litigation, patent procurement, licensing, and technology transfer. He also advises companies and individuals in intellectual property matters, including patents, copyrights, and trade secrets.
Since joining Finnegan in 1988, Mr. Sonu has been involved in more than 50 federal district court litigations and U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) investigations concerning intellectual property, representing some of the world’s largest corporations. Specific technologies at issue have included semiconductor devices, consumer electronic products (e.g., TVs, DVD players, washing machines, refrigerators), automobiles, precision testing equipment, and sophisticated electronic components (e.g., LEDs, laser diodes, PDDs, LCDs).
Mr. Sonu has extensive experience in handling international disputes over intellectual property and has been involved in many mediation and settlement negotiations. He also has extensive experience handling technology transfer and licensing in the global setting and has prosecuted and managed a large portfolio of patent applications.
Mr. Sonu was born in Korea and speaks Korean fluently. Before joining Finnegan, he worked for nearly 17 years with major corporations including DuPont, IBM, and Zenith Electronics in research/engineering, business management, and law. While Mr. Sonu was a business development manager at DuPont, he was instrumental in forming business alliances with corporations based in Korea and Japan and developed beneficial relationships with the business community in that region. Mr. Sonu also worked as a foreign legal consultant in Korea from 1991 to 1995 and gained trust and respect from its legal and business communities.
Mr. Sonu is a frequent lecturer at legal and corporate seminars on intellectual property issues in the global setting. He has chaired and lectured at conferences sponsored by various industry and legal associations, particularly those based in Asia.
Represented large electronic companies in numerous district court and ITC patent and trademark infringement actions concerning products ranging from home appliances to TVs and cellular phones.
Represented large automotive companies and major semiconductor companies in district court patent infringement actions.
Represented medium-size component suppliers in multiple district court and ITC patent infringement actions concerning testing equipment, LEDs, and laser diodes.
Handled technical transfer and licensing for large corporations and major research institutes.
