John R. Alison

John Alison has handled U.S. patent infringement cases for over 25 years primarily focusing in the areas of semiconductors, optoelectronics, and pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Alison has participated in more than 100 patent, trade secret, and trademark litigations filed in U.S. district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and state courts, and in appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Fourth Circuit, and Sixth Circuit. He has served as trial counsel for semiconductor, optoelectronic, and telecommunications clients in the greater China region including HTC, S3 Graphics, Seoul Semiconductor, Actions Semiconductor, HannStar, Wintek, Chi Mei, TPO, Lite-On, System General, and Winbond, and for pioneering U.S. technology companies Texas Instruments and Xerox. He has served as trial counsel in pharmaceutical and biotechnology cases for Eli Lilly and Company, GlaxoSmithKline, Wyeth, Beckman-Coulter, and NeXstar (now Astellas Pharma).

In addition to litigation, Mr. Alison actively works in intellectual property licensing. He is a founding member of the Chinese-Taipei branch of Licensing Executives Society International, where he served as past vice-president and now serves on the Board of Directors.

From 2004 to 2007, Mr. Alison served as resident managing partner of Finnegan's Taipei office, the Fei Han Foreign Legal Affairs Law Firm. He currently teaches as an associate professor at Taiwan's Graduate Institute of Intellectual Property Management at National ChengChi University and also serves as Guest Research Fellow at Peking University's Institute of International Intellectual Property Protection. Previously he served as an associate professor at National Chiao Tung University's Institute for Technology Law.

Mr. Alison served as law clerk to Chief Judge Howard T. Markey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit from 1984 to 1986.

Highlights

  • Managed ITC investigations filed by HTC Corporation and S3 Graphics against Apple involving power management, dialer interface, and methods for texture compression.
  • In re Short Wavelength Semiconductor Lasers, 337-TA-627 (ITC). Represented Seoul Semiconductor against Nichia involving short wavelength semiconductor lasers.
  • Defended HannStar in district court patent litigations filed by Anvik relating to microlithography scanners and filed by Plasma Physics relating to LCD manufacturing processes.
  • Defended TPO and Wintek in district court litigations filed by Honeywell relating to directional diffusers for LCD displays.
  • In re Audio Processing Integrated Circuits, 337-TA-538 (ITC). Successfully defended Actions Semiconductor in an ITC Investigation involving audio processing integrated circuits.
  • Successfully defended Wyeth in Hatch-Waxman litigations against generic drug manufacturers Anchen, Impax, Lupin, and Wochart.
  • Regents of the University of California v. Eli Lilly and Company (N.D. Ind., S.D. Ind., Fed. Cir.). Successfully defended Eli Lilly and Company in patent infringement action filed by the Regents of the University of California relating to the manufacture of recombinant human insulin (HUMULIN®).
  • Helped found Howard University Law School’s institute on Patent Law and Social Policy, 2003.
