On October 20, 2015, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision which found that Finnegan client LG Electronics had proven that six claims of Black Hills Media's '686 data retrieval patent are unpatentable. In 2013, Black Hills Media alleged that LG and other electronics companies infringed its patents with their mobile phones, tablets, televisions, and other electronic devices. After Samsung was granted an inter partes review from the PTAB, LG also sought an inter partes review and brought a motion to join Samsung's proceeding; the PTAB granted the bid for joinder.
