Kara Stoll has extensive experience in appellate practice, patent litigation, and client counseling. She has drafted numerous briefs and argued in appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She has had significant responsibility in over a dozen district court litigations, conducted all types of discovery, drafted and argued motions, and prepared and examined trial witnesses.
Cases that Ms. Stoll has worked on have primarily involved leaders in the consumer electronics, computer, software, and medical device industries. Specific technologies at issue have included electronic gaming systems, digital set-top boxes, implantable heart stimulation devices, memory devices, RF transmitters, and various operating system and application software.
While Ms. Stoll dedicates the majority of her time to patent-related matters, she is also involved in the firm’s pro bono program, representing clients in both civil and criminal matters.
Highlights
- Represented Cardiac Pacemakers in a bench trial in the Delaware district court on the validity of a patent for implantable cardiac stimulators to treat heart failure; the validity of the patent was upheld by the district court and the Federal Circuit on appeal.
- Represented appellant Conair in an appeal from an adverse jury verdict; the judgment of patent infringement against Conair was reversed by the Federal Circuit.
- Represented appellant Cardiac Pacemakers in an appeal involving implantable cardiac defibrillators; the judgment of patent invalidity and noninfringement against Cardiac Pacemakers was vacated by the Federal Circuit.
- Represented appellant Sony in an appeal involving gaming systems; the case settled favorably following oral argument.
- Represented Oneida Indian Nation in development and enforcement of patents relating to cashless gaming systems.
- Served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alvin A. Schall, Circuit Judge at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, 1997.
- Served as law clerk with the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
- Former patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, examining applications in the area of computers and display technology.
- Adjunct professor at George Mason School of Law, teaching a course on Federal Circuit Practice and Procedure.
- Represented the appellant in a pro bono appeal before the Federal Circuit.
