Partner

John Romary has more than thirty years of experience in patent litigation and related matters. His diverse technical range runs the gamut from sophisticated electronics to genetic engineering issues. Experienced in all phases of litigation, he has been responsible for managing ongoing litigations, including motion practice, discovery, and substantive issues such as validity and infringement. An expert in risk analysis, he weighs the economic risks of a litigation against the potential benefits, and advises clients accordingly. Additionally, he has been involved in a substantial number of licensing negotiations and has concluded many litigations through licensing agreements.

Highlights

  • Worked as an electrical engineer for General Electric Company’s Washington Patent Operation, where he gained his initial experience writing and prosecuting patent applications and preparing infringement and validity opinions.
  • Worked as a law clerk to the Honorable James L. Latchum, chief judge of the U.S. District Court, District of Delaware—a court that was a focal point for patent matters before the founding of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
  • Participated in Russia as a U.S. delegate and as Western Co-Director to advanced NATO workshops—attended by some of the most influential representatives of the Russian, British, French, German, and Japanese intellectual property community—that were responsible for formulating a blueprint to convert Russian nonmilitary intellectual property into the Russian private sector, while maintaining control over the export of military technology in Russia.
