While patent infringement cases featured prominently on the list of the 10 largest intellectual property judgments, settlements and verdicts in 2010, Law360 notes how trademark and copyright suits have made a splash as well, with large payouts in cases concerning digital technology and the still-murky world of Internet commerce. On the patent front, 2010's biggest awards came down in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, indicating the court is still the place for plaintiffs to go for big dollar figures, said Finnegan partner Dori Hines. Even though the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has transferred more cases out of the Eastern District of Texas in recent years, Hines said plaintiffs' success in getting big judgments from the court in 2010 indicate patent cases will likely continue to stream into the court in 2011.
