Data released by the European Patent Office in March 2014 indicates “patent filings were at an all-time high in 2013, with the United States the single largest provider of applications.” The trend is likely an indication of a growing global economy and increasing global perspective on IP protection, according to Finnegan partner Anthony C. Tridico, Ph.D. “A lot of companies that may have historically only filed in the U.S.,” he said, “are now filing in other markets as their businesses grow and become international.” In the last decade, there has been “a wider appreciation of the importance of intellectual property,” Tridico added.
